Glow-worm F.20 Fault Code: Safety Thermal Cut-Out Guide
The F.20 fault code on a Glow-worm boiler means the safety thermal cut-out has operated, shutting the boiler off because it was overheating.
What the F.20 fault code means
The F.20 code is an overheat safety shutdown. The boiler has a safety thermal cut-out that trips if the water inside the boiler gets too hot. When this trips, the boiler shuts down to prevent damage to the heat exchanger and other components.
Possible causes of the F.20 fault
- System water pressure below normal range of 1 to 1.5 bar
- Fault in the electrical connection for the flow and/or return temperature sensor
- Flow and/or return temperature sensor defective
- Circulation fault — pump, valve, or blockage
- Water pressure sensor defective
- Volume flow sensor defective
- Ignition cable, ignition plug or ignition electrode issue
Can you fix it yourself?
-
Check the water pressure — Refill the system if needed (to 1–1.5 bar) using the filling loop.
-
Look for leaks — Check around radiators, valves, and visible pipes.
-
Ensure radiator valves are open — Closed valves restrict flow and can cause overheating.
-
Check external pumps and zone valves are working — If you have them.
-
Make sure there are no airlocks — Bleed your radiators.
If the fault persists after these checks, call a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not keep resetting the boiler — the thermal cut-out is a safety device.
