Why Is My Boiler Making a Noise?

Why Is My Boiler Making a Noise?

A boiler should run smoothly and relatively quietly. If yours is tucked away in a cupboard or garage you may never hear it at all, but even an exposed boiler will make some perfectly normal sounds while it works. The trick is knowing which noises are harmless and which ones mean it's time to call a Gas Safe engineer.

In this guide we break down both kinds, so you can judge whether to pick up the phone. If you're ever in doubt, make that call — fixing a noisy boiler is usually affordable and effective, but ignoring it could be expensive or even dangerous.

Normal Sounds Your Boiler Should Make

Your boiler contains moving parts, and like a car or a laptop, those parts create noise. Boilers do hard work — heating water and pumping it around your home — so it's no surprise that sounds come from within.

If you've just had a new boiler installed, the engineer will test it before they leave. Listen to the sounds it makes and ask questions about where they're coming from. That way you'll be better placed to spot anything abnormal later on.

Quiet Whirring

If the heating is on, a quiet whirring is completely normal. It's the pump circulating water around the boiler's burner and heat exchanger, and possibly pumping hot water out to your radiators.

Deep Rumbling

When you turn on your gas boiler, the flames ignite and start heating the water passing over them. It should be quiet, but you may still hear a gentle rumble — just as you can hear a gas burner on a cooker hob.

Clicking

Modern boilers receive information from thermostats and the control panel, which triggers switches and valves inside as components switch on and off and water is redirected. These are usually silent, but you might hear the occasional click from time to time.

Boiler Noises That Require Investigation

Once you're used to the sounds your boiler makes in normal operation, you'll notice quickly if it's behaving unusually. Below are the most common sounds to listen out for.

Banging

A banging noise is most often traced to a process called kettling. This happens when limescale builds up on the heat exchanger and restricts the flow of water to the point where it literally boils. (Despite the name, boilers shouldn't actually boil water to 100°C — they usually run in the 65–70°C range.) The banging sound is the water turning to steam and expanding, just like a kettle on the hob.

If limescale isn't the culprit, it's possible the boiler's internal thermostat is faulty or set up incorrectly, causing it to overheat the water.

Banging pipes: If the banging is coming from the pipes rather than the boiler itself, it often indicates water hammer — a reversal of flow when you turn taps or a shower on or off. While common, aggressive or frequent hammering can cause damage, so call an engineer if you're concerned.

Whistling

Kettling can cause a whistling sound (think of old whistling kettles), but it's more likely that whistling is caused by trapped air in the system. An engineer can release the air quickly, but a good engineer will also want to find out how air is getting in — because that shouldn't happen.

Mechanical causes are possible too. Pumps that need oiling are prone to squeaking or whistling. Leave that to your engineer to fix.

Gurgling

If you've ever gurgled mouthwash or emptied a bath, you'll recognise this sound — a rapid, low, liquid noise caused by water being agitated with air passed through it. Gurgling from your boiler is most likely caused by trapped air, which can also find its way into radiators.

You can bleed your radiators as a first step. If that doesn't work, it's time to call a professional — you may need to drain the whole system.

A frozen condensate pipe can also cause gurgling. This happens in cold weather when the pipe runs outside. The blockage stops proper circulation through the condenser. You may be able to fix this yourself by warming the condensate pipe with hot water bottles. To prevent it happening again, consider insulating the pipe.

Grinding

A loud grinding noise almost certainly means a faulty pump. Switch off your system and call an engineer straight away — a boiler without a working pump is useless and could overheat.

Loud Vibrating

Boiler vibrations can be particularly unsettling because they're not only heard but sometimes felt through the walls of your home.

Common causes include:

  • An unbalanced system — leads to uneven water flow and pressure differences. Rebalance by bleeding radiators and adjusting valves.
  • Loose parts — such as screws inside the boiler. A technician should check and tighten these. If parts keep coming loose, it's a sign the boiler may need replacing.
  • A thermostat malfunction — causing it to misread temperature. Replacing the thermostat can fix this.
  • Debris in the heat exchanger — restricts water flow and leads to uneven boiling. A technician can clean and reassemble the boiler to resolve it.

What to Do If Your Boiler Is Making a Noise

The causes and remedies above are a guide to help you rule out the simple things first. But any action you take should be preliminary only. If you are in any doubt whatsoever about the cause of your boiler's noises, contact a Gas Safe registered engineer.

At Sanju's Heating, our Gas Safe engineers diagnose and fix noisy boilers every day. Whether it's kettling, trapped air, a faulty pump or something else entirely, we'll get your heating running quietly and safely again.

The Importance of Annual Boiler Servicing

Many of the issues that cause boiler noise can be prevented with an annual boiler service. Your engineer will identify worn-out parts, replace components with a limited lifespan, and check for signs of wear and tear before they become bigger problems.

Your boiler is too important to go without — but keeping it working is a matter of safety as well as comfort. Keep it serviced, use it as the manual instructs, and get help the moment you hear anything unusual.

Book your annual boiler service with Sanju's Heating today and keep your home warm, quiet and safe all year round.
