Ideal F3 Fault Code: Fan Fault Guide
The F3 fault code on an Ideal boiler means there is a fault with the fan.
What the F3 fault code means
The fan is responsible for drawing air into the boiler for combustion and pushing exhaust gases out through the flue. If the fan is loose, damaged, or not running correctly, the boiler will shut down for safety because it cannot guarantee safe combustion.
Possible causes of the F3 fault
- Loose or damaged fan — The fan may have come loose or the impeller may be damaged.
- Loose or damaged connections — The wiring to the fan may be faulty.
- Water damage from a boiler leak — A leak inside the boiler may have damaged the fan.
- Fault with the air pressure switch — The switch that monitors fan operation may be faulty.
- Problem with the printed circuit board — The PCB may not be controlling the fan correctly.
Can you fix it yourself?
No. The F3 fault requires a Gas Safe registered engineer. As the issue can stem from a range of causes — from a loose fan to water damage to a PCB fault — repair costs can vary significantly.
Do not attempt to open the boiler casing or inspect the fan yourself — this is a gas appliance and must only be worked on by a qualified professional.
