Vaillant F61 Fault Code: Meaning, Causes & Fixes
It's a cold morning, you're ready for a hot shower, and your Vaillant boiler flashes the F61 fault code. No heating, no hot water — and a lot of frustration. Here's what F61 means and what you should do.
What the F61 fault code means
The F61 fault code indicates a fuel valve actuation fault — the gas valve cannot be actuated. This is a serious gas safety fault involving the gas valve, the cable harness that supplies it, or the PCB (printed circuit board).
Possible causes of the F61 fault
- Cable harness supply line to the gas valve is defective — There may be a short to earth or a short circuit in the wiring that controls the gas valve.
- Gas valve defective — The gas valve itself may have failed and need replacing.
- PCB defective — The printed circuit board that controls the gas valve may be faulty.
Can you fix it yourself?
No. The F61 fault is a serious gas safety fault. You should not attempt to fix this yourself — attempting to repair a gas valve or PCB without the proper qualifications is dangerous and illegal.
Do not keep resetting the boiler. The F61 code is a safety shutdown, and repeatedly resetting it will not fix the underlying problem.
What to do next
- Do not reset the boiler repeatedly — This is a gas safety fault that requires professional diagnosis.
- Turn off the boiler — If you smell gas or are concerned, turn off the gas supply at the meter.
- Call a Gas Safe registered engineer — This fault requires a qualified professional to test the gas valve, cable harness, and PCB to determine which component has failed.
How much does it cost to fix?
The cost depends on which component has failed:
- Cable harness repair — Relatively inexpensive, typically a straightforward wiring fix.
- Gas valve replacement — A common repair, usually a few hundred pounds including parts and labour.
- PCB replacement — More expensive, and on older boilers it may be more cost-effective to consider a replacement boiler.
